This coming Monday is Labor Day. Labor Day weekend is usually the last big summer party weekend through out the US. It signals the end of summer and the start of preparing for fall. Many of you may be planning a weekend on the lake or bar-b-que at home with family. Or maybe you will be spending the weekend quietly completing home renovations and yard cleanings.
Why do we celebrate Labor Day, though? Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. (https://www.dol.gov/general/laborday/history) Did you know that the very first Labor Day ordinances took place in September of 1882? Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." While celebrating this weekend keep in mind the past generations that have worked so tirelessly to make this country what it is today. Ignore the political and social drama and remember that our forefathers worked very hard for everything you see around you; the technological advances, the medical advances, and the advances in our very welfare. Be proud of the hard work you put in on a daily basis!
